This is a sterile version of Benrus Type 1, most probably issued to
Navy Seal or UDT members. There is a serial number inscribed on the
caseback and this one is marked '2307125'. Other than that, no other
markings are to be found anywhere on the watch. These Benrus dive watches originally came with fixed strap bars and black one-piece nylon strap. The fixed bars on this watch must have been "field modified" as they have been replaced with spring bars in order to accomodate the macho-looking stainless steel band, known as the Olongapo band. The Olongapo band was made by the natives in Olongapo near Subic Bay where a major US naval base was located during the height of Vietnam war. It was considered de-facto standard among the members of Seal teams. This particular example has "Seal Trident" and "Scuba Diver" insignias attached. Other examples with different insignias are known to exist. Black luminous dial is signed "Swiss Movement" at 6 o'clock position. It is a very tiny inscription so you would have to look very carefully. Sterile Benrus watches, along with other Benrus MIL-W-50717 military dive watches, are non-magnetic in order to allow the wearer to work with magnetic mines underwater. Crystal is screwed down to the face of the case with an unique metal O-ring gasket. Screw-down crystal and one-piece case design allowed superior water resistance for these Benrus dive watches. Movement is 17 jewels automatic Benrus Model GS-1D2 that hacks and is manually windable.
