This is the sterile version of Benrus Type 1 that is so highly sought after by many military watch collectors. It is also known as the CIA model as it was issued to CIA maritime units along with NAVY Seals and Green Berets during Vietnam War. These sterile watches, along with other Benrus dive watches, are non-magnetic to allow the wearer to work with magnetic mines underwater. There is a serial number inscribed on the caseback. Mine is marked '2701222'. Other than that, no other markings are to be found anywhere on the watch. Neither the military specification number nor the issue date. Crystal is screwed down to the face of the case with an unique metal O-ring gasket. Screw-down crystal and one-piece case design allowed superior water resistance for these Benrus dive watches. Movement is Benrus signed 17 jewel automatic movement. The watch was issued with extra length 20mm black nylon strap so it can be worn over a wetsuit. I prefer these 20mm US military issue straps over NATO straps because they are more durable and comfortable to wear. The drawback is that they are not readily available. You would have to contact Marathon Watch Co. or Stocker and Yale since Benrus no longer have parts for their military watches.
